The star has given the entirety of his £25k Mercury Prize winnings to the MVT, which works to protect the United Kingdom's independent live music spots.

The star was presented with the award on October 16 as his latest record the album was named the best record of the past year.

Fender has decided to donate the funds to the MVT, in acknowledgment of the essential function grassroots venues fulfilled in his early career.

"I couldn't be pursuing my current career if it wasn't for all the shows I played around the North East, and further afield, when I was starting out," said the artist. "These spaces are renowned, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these venues have ceased operations – roughly 16% of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, major artists such as Pulp, the group Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the Music Venues Trust in its attempts to help venues survive, by applying a modest fee to their ticket costs, which supports local stages.

He also took part, raising more than £100,000 on his live tour to help numerous grassroots venues across Britain.

The donation supported locations that were confronting possible closure due to challenges arising from water damage, fire incidents and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, legal disputes and neighbor objections.

Some locations were granted financial assistance in improving infrastructure and gear that helped artists and fans.

"The concept that money from performances in big venues supports the local stages, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just common sense," Fender has stated.

Fender is among several artists to donate his honor winnings to charitable organizations.

In Pulp received the prize in 1996 for their release Different Class, lead singer Cocker announced that the group would give their winnings to the charity War Child.

During 2002, artist she shared her bounty between multiple organizations, such as the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"And I donated a grand to the center, to their gymnastics program, because I trained in gymnastics when I was a child and they required better apparatus," the artist told the media.

In recent years, they donated their funds to the youth organization that nurtured their act, in addition to other local music groups.

Also 1994 winners the group donated their award to a multiple sclerosis charity after a close contact was found to have the illness.

"Winning was quite enough," stated artist the singer. "The prize was the bonus but we could do without the cherry, because we had the main prize. So our winning impacted somebody else's life."

Last week, the trust announced it had protected several grassroots venues in the South East, by transferring them to community ownership.

The first in the city and the other in the city were acquired under the community ownership scheme, which is backed by the arts council and music fans who buy "stakes" in the properties.
