In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the official agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Government Consultations Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with several major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
